The moon was laughing at me. At least that was how it felt as I sat in the rocking chair in front of the ranchâs guest house.
It hung fat and heavy above my head, taunting me with the sight of it. Because I wasn't supposed to be looking at the moon. I wasn't supposed to be outside at all.
Work on the ranch always started before the sun rose and that wake-up call was fast approaching. I was supposed to be in bed, staring at the darkness of my eyelids.
Instead, I found myself waiting for the same guy I'd spent the entire day avoiding.
This was dumb.
I was being so dumb.
Chrom and I had no future. We weren't together. There would never be an us. How many times in how many ways did I need to repeat it before I got the damn idea through my thick skull?
Except it wasn't my skull that was the problem, was it? It was my stupid, dumb heart.
The same heart that ached this morning when he text me to say he'd be late and I feigned nonchalance.
The same heart that thumped in longing when he arrived with an easy grin for everyone and a smoldering look for me.
The same heart that contracted with fear that sent me running to every corner of the ranch to avoid him all day.
Maintaining my distance seemed like the best way to keep my already perilous attachment from becoming something I couldn't shake. But I had a bad feeling that it was already too late.
That notion gained weight when I heard his truck pull away in the middle of the night andârather than ignore it like I should haveâI decided I'd wait for him to come back.
Why?
Why couldn't I leave him alone?
Why did I keep chasing disaster?
Headlights appeared through the trees, followed by the crunch of tires on gravel. My pulse picked up speed, palms sweating, and wiping them on my leggings barely made a difference.
Part of me wanted to flee back into the house.
The other part wanted to jump into the approaching vehicle and beg him to drive far, far away. Far enough that my shackles broke and I could just be his for however long the illusion lasted.
Chrom pulled into a space and cut the engine, sliding from the seat with a stiffness I'd never seen from him and a groan that made me frown.
He hadn't seen me yet, otherwise I was certain that he wouldn't have sagged against the door, shoulders slumping, head bowed, exhaustion and something elseâsomething more desolateâcoming off him in waves.
Cast in moonlight, most of his features in shadow, he looked like a statue. A polished-gold depiction of a weary king who put the needs of the kingdom above his own and rested only in stolen moments.
I didn't have an artistic bone in my body and I wanted to paint him like that. Wanted to capture this moment and preserve it indefinitely.
He'd never been more attractive to me than he was just then because I knew where at least some of that exhaustion came from.
